DATACAD LLC
Software for AEC Professionals Since 1984

TECHNICAL BULLETIN

1. From the Edit menu, select Toolbox. Double click LyrUtil.
  • You can also press [Shift]+[M]

  • In DataCAD version 9 or later, you can also select LyrUtil from the Macros pull-down menu.
2. Select LyrSave.
  • You will be presented with the options SaveAll, SaveOn, Views, Details, and LyrMenu.

  • SaveAll saves all layers in the drawing.

  • SaveOn saves only those layers currently toggled on.

  • Views toggle saves your go-to-views.

  • Details toggle lets you save Multi-Scale Plotting details
TIP If you continue to have difficulty with a file after running the Layer Utility macro, try toggling Views and Details off and repeat steps 2 – 10.

3. Select SaveAll.
  • Select SaveOn if you wish to save only those layers that are currently toggled on.
4. Type a name that does not contain any spaces and click Open.
  • When the dialog box appears, the file name field contains the name of the active drawing. If this name does not contain any spaces, you can press [Enter] to accept it. If it does contain spaces, you must remove them or type a new name.

  • When the dialog box appears, make sure the \LYR directory is listed in the “Look In” field. If it is not, use the “Up one level” icon or the drop-down menu bar to navigate to the \DATACAD\LYR directory.
5. Exit the macro and close the file.
  • Exit the macro by either right-clicking your mouse or selecting Exit from the menu.

  • Close the file by selecting Close from the File pull-down menu. Select Yes to save your changes.
6. Create a new drawing file.
  • Select New from the File pull-down menu and type a new name. You can use the same name as the previous version of the file, with a generation number or letter added to the end. For example, if the previous file was MyDrawing, the new version should be called MyDrawing1 or MyDrawingA.
7. From the Edit menu, select Toolbox then double-click LyrUtil.

8. Select LyrLoad.

9. Choose the *.LYS file and select Open.
  • In the dialog box, you will see a directory with the file name from the previous session and a file with an *.LYS extension. The directory contains the actual layer files; the *.LYS file is the control file.
10. Click Yes, then save the changes to the file.
  • DataCAD asks if you wish to delete this session’s control and layer files. Selecting Yes deletes the files from your hard drive. Selecting No retains them for subsequent use.
