Could we have the ability to set a default material to be applied to all new entities.

Might depend on how you are working, but could you preset it in your default drawings, depending on if your using By Layer or By Colors?

Pardon my ignorance. Do you set the default material for each layer? How does 'by colour' work?

In the layer manager, you can set a material for each layer in the menu buttons on the left or right hand side of the layer list.

Any entities added to the layer will include the material along with the color that has been assigned. The entities will maintain the assigned color even if the default material is changed for some reasons.

I prefer assigning materials by layer instead of color because it allows the colors or palettes to be changed without affecting material assignments.
