I prefer using open arrows (with an aspect ratio of 0.5) instead of hash marks on my arrows. Once the dimension gets to be be less than 1'-0" the arrows stay between the witness lines and crowd each other until they simply disappear (which looks like a mistake or that you forgot to add the arrows to the dimension).
My wish would be a toggle setting that would force the arrrow to the outside of the witness lines - and lengthen the overrun so that I could move the text to the side and it would look graphically correct.
