In the Datacad comparison chart I found the following

.DWG AutoCAD R2004 through R2006 drawing file Check Check New!

I Have version 11 at the moment and have had to save to AutoCad 2000 all the time is there an update or something I am missing out on.

Thanks
Steve

The "File Compatibility (Open, Import, or Paste)" section says "AutoCAD R2004 through R2006" "AutoCAD R2007 - R2008 drawing file" for ver. 12. Scroll down to the "File Compatibility (SaveAs, Export, or Copy)" section to see Datacad 11&12 only saves up to, uh well it says, R2002 on the comparison sheet, but the dialog box only says R2000, even in my pre-release of v.12? Maybe some clarification is needed here?

Maybe a little more clarification. What R15 R16 R17 file formats?

Those are Autodesk's designations for their file formats. If you open up an Acad DWG file in a text editor, one of those designations will show up in the header - it's how lower versions know that they can't open up a file if it's been created by a higher version.
