I have a whole host of DWG files that are version AC1015 (and some are AC1021) and DataCAD will only open some of them. It tries and when it gets to Entity section 100% DataCAD freezes and says "not responding". I don't have access to the originator to get them in a different version.

You might try the free Autodesk DWG True View, that allow convertions among different versions:
