I am trying to create a new material for use in my smart walls, after downloading an image from the web. The image looks ok on the web. However, it looks too dark in material editor. Any ideas how to fix this?

Select the Matte Material default icon (first purple cube) to reset the material values.
The reflection color should typically be white (unless you want to add 'reflected' color to the material).
Bump the Diffuse and Ambient values up to 90 and 80 respectively.
The Reflection value should be 10 or less for non-reflective surfaces.

Click once over the object preview, then press [0] to toggle all lights (Sun, Ambient 1,2, and 3) on/off.
Your preview looks as if all lights have been turned off.

Thanks for that Mark.
Note for users - The numbers keypad do not toggle lights. Use the numbers on the top of the keypad.
