how make a covered polyline ellipse?

Is there a way to make a covered ellipse to get a 3d object for a model in the 2d menu using polylines? I can make a cirlce there no problem and was hoping I could use the Enlarge tool to "squeeze" down the Y dimension so not equal to the X from my covered polyline circle and create an ellipse.
That concept works in the 3d menu but the perimeter is very segmented and not smooth like it is with a covered 2d polyline.
Maybe there is a trick. Thank you.
