Somehow my "edit" function has been reset so that when I draw a line, the distance is drawn from the origin. How do I fix this?

sounds like you hit the insert key which rotates you through the imput methods. Hit it again until it's what you want for coordinate system.

I went to Datacad and to the Edit list. I started a line and hit the space bar to indicate i want a dimensioned line. I then hit the "insert" key but it did nothing. I still have the line going from the origin. Where is the "insert" you are referring to?

You can also check/change your input mode under Tools/Input Mode

Before you enter the commands, hit the insert button, usually next to the Print Screen/Home/Delete buttons

If your menu layout is like the one in the picture, you can pick the box at the bottom and choose which ever one you prefer from the fly-out list.
