Is there a maximum number of x-references that I can have in a drawing before the drawing crashes?

There is no explicit maximum on the number of XRefs allowed in a drawing. However having said that, there may be a maximum number that your computer can comfortably handle before the drawing becomes intolerably slow. This will be affected by processor speed, installed RAM and the speed of the medium (local HDD, SSD or network server/NAS) where your drawing, XRefs and temporary files reside. Keep in mind that the number of XRefs is also affected by nesting. If you have nesting enabled on any particular XRef, each of its nested (the level of nesting has no explicit limit) also add to the count of total XRefs.
