Unknown setting problem:click, space, dist, enter=no line?

Click to start line, space to enter distance results in need to enter more "enter angle from the origin" which can generate a line somewhere near absolute 0.
I have not idea why this appears. I must have made some change inadvertently. I have other files where this does not occur. I can find no special settings where this might result in this.
Looked for solutions, find none. Maybe "get snap". Lots of time wasted. Need help.
