Would there be a way to have the 'y' and the 'Y' shortcuts return you to the (2D) menus after you right click out? (BTW, I have never actually used either of these shortcuts...)

Probably not.

When you're in the 3D Menu and you hit [a] for the Architect menu, when you right click you're returned to the 2D Edit menu, not the 3D Menu you were in when you hit [a].
