Please verify. I just don't understand why they can't be edited like polylines which thay seem to be, albeit tweaked. Is there a work-around to edit them?

You can stretch any of the points on the contour with the Stretch command. To make the points visible, go to the 3d menus, select Settings, select Draw Marks (F5). Caution: This will turn on points for all polygons and polylines as well.
