It would be nice to be able to set the paths of references to be relative to the CAD file that they are imported into. Would solve my Orphaned references when I archive my jobs.

If you archive to a different location, you can put a copy of the external files into the same directory as the main file and Datacad should look there for it when it can't find it at the original location.
