What are the best tools to render elevations with (realistic) color and texture?

Several methods depending on the speed, budget and quality you want:

1. Architectural markers
2. Water colors
3. SBF fill in DataCAD
4. Adobe Photoshop or similar "paint" program.
5. Adobe Illustrator
6. Sketchup.
7. Thea Render (my choice) or any photo realistic rendering software.

Building on what Bob posted (and he is one of the MASTERS, so heed his advice!), I've found that for down-n-dirty colored stuff do SPB Fills and adjust your pen table (and re-save) as necessary. If you need Photo Realistic it would be worth the investment to hire someone like Bob who can do what you want WAY faster than you could hunt-n-peck through.
