Often it seems when importing DWG files specific items are what cause a DWG import to fail. I recently stumbled upon that if I have the layer manager open when I import a DWG, I can watch Datacad import the layers as it processes them and then when it crashes or fails the import process the Layer Manager is still showing the layers as it imported them. I then open the DWG file with DWG TrueView or Autocad, check and see if there is actually anything on that layer that I need. If not I delete the layer, save the file and retry the import process. I have had pretty good success doing this. The main benefit has been I usually don't have to explode things into tons of bits in order to get the file imported and I end up with a cleaner, leaner file. Granted there are times when I am still forced to save down to v14 DXF because something on the defpoints layer freaks something out or other wonky issues beyond my comprehension, but this process has been helping to point me in the right direction.

I guess a wish might be if we could pick what layers are imported during the import process.
