One of the things I miss from the pre-softlock days was the ability to double click on a file from Windows Explorer and have it open up quickly in Datacad. Now with the softlock, regardless if Datacad is running or not, Datacad starts some sort of license check process that is rather slow before it will open the file. It was faster to just locate the file using Datacad's File, Open dialog instead of double clicking on a file usually. A cheap trick is that if Datacad is already started you can now quickly open a file by dragging and dropping it into the Datacad window. Works with Datacad 16 or newer.

Another cheap trick is similar to how we can tag Favorite folders in the Symbol Browser, we can pin our favorite drawings (base files for example) to the Datacad program button I the taskbar in Windows 7 or later. With Datacad started, you can pin a drawing by dragging an .AEC file to the Datacad taskbar button and releasing it. You access the pinned drawings by right clicking on the taskbar button. You can also pin/unpin any of the recent .AEC files from this right click context menu. Only downside to this method is that it uses the slower method of launching the drawing file after preforming the license check, but at least you don't have to go hunting for the file first.
