This is not really a cheap trick, but if you have ClearType enabled for your computer's display (Right Click on Desktop, Properties, Appearances Tab, Effects) it can really wash out the text in the MText and PText dialogs. While other text in the operating system can seem to benefit from ClearType, especially on LCD screens, it may be worth checking how it effects your MText/PText on your display if you are working with Datacad a lot on that system.
