Maybe I'm a little slow, but I didn't realize that if you go into the Tangents menu and select a point on an arc (ANY point), the cursor will rotate to be perpendicular/parallel to that point on the arc!

I wish I had known that last year. It's the sort of thing you might only need once but when that time comes up, nothing else will do.
