I have a symbol with a couple of layers and one turned on in one file. Then I xref that file into another and both layers in that symbol are on. What should I have done so that only the one layer in that symbol would have been on in the xref? Both layers showed up in the xref and I didn't want that.
I would guess that in the drawing where the xref is that you need to make sure the Insert menu's Symbol Layer Control settings are set to match the settings set in the original drawing where the symbol lives.

I tried all the different settings in the layer control and the layer didn't shut off. Maybe next time I'll figure it out. I just deleted the layers in the symbol I didn't want to see this time. I don't have time for trial and error lately.
did you try locking the layer the symbols were on? There are some more tweeks that are needed on this feature. Including the symbols need to keep there settings (or be stripped of off layers) when exporting to .dwg.

FWIW, how I tested it was I created a new drawing. Set SLC to Per Instance. Inserted a layered symbol, adjusted the layers that were on/off. Force saved the file. Created a 2nd new drawings. Set SLC to Per Instance. Inserted an xref of the 1st file and the xrefed symbol looked correct displaying the desired layers. I then returned to the 1st file and adjusted which layers were on/off, force saved, returned to the 2nd file and hit U to refresh the xref in it updated properly. I am using beta 21.00.01.01 so not sure it there is something updated related to this or not but there is not mention of anything in this version vs the current release of v21.
