How do you go about setting the default distance for both "z" base and height. I know how to change it but there must be a way of setting it to begin with. I am assuming once that can be set can this be used to figure volumn and if so how or what do you have to do to get that?

z

hit the z key, set the z-base, z-height and those settings will continue to be used.
Caution, if you do a Identify, set all, then the z values will be changed to what that entity z's are

Also, if you create and use base files that have your typical drawing info like borders, typical notes, typical details, etc., you can set your z-base/height in those file to a default value as well so your new projects always start how you prefer.

Also, be aware of the Settings/Z ByLayr setting. If disabled then the Z base/height of all layers will be modified if you use the z shortcut ... if enabled then only the current layer will be updated.
