I have been experiencing the following error message with xref's. I have had the same error happen with several files. It happens when an xref is inserted with nesting on and is later turned off with the Reference File Manager. I please see the screen shot of the error.

I am also finding a fairly consistent nested xRef crash. If I snap to a point on a nested xRef, DCAD pauses, then shows the round, blue, rotating circle and then crashes completely out of the program. If I remember to turn nesting off for any xRef's I plan to snap to, DCAD then allows me to snap to points in the xRef without crashing.

A "sometimes" successful workaround I've been using is to slightly scroll the mouse wheel which seems to prevent the path to crashing, but this needs to occur before the animated blue circle appears.

If I had to guess, I would say that 80-90% of the time I have these types of errors, the problem lies in the xref source file. If I can find the underlying issue in the source file, the xref usually stops having issues. That said, deleting the xref in question and replacing with a fresh one is quick so I usually start with that before I go hunting too deep. I make sure to close all drawings, empty the temp files folder and and reopen the drawing after replacing an xref to make sure they are playing nice. If they are not then I look to the source file to hunt stuff down.

Mine was a self xRef file. When I had just the self xRef on the screen and then middle button clicked on a snap point, it would consistently crash the file. I erased the xRef and deleted that layer. I made a new layer and then created the same self xRef onto that layer. That fixed the problem. I could then middle button snap to any point on the xRef file and no more crashing.

When I get this error with nested xref's, I am unable to delete the xref. Every time I try to delete the xref, the file crashes. The only way I have found to resolve it, is to copy all non-xref's and paste it into a new file. I then re-insert the xref's with no nesting.

One thing to try is hold down CTRL before opening the file to suppress the loading of all the xrefs. You might be able to delete the xref then. Then if you can delete the xref, close and save the drawing and re-open the file as normal.

Another option is to us the Layer/Erase to erase the layer contents leaving blank layer(s), then you can reload a new xref. This allows any GTV's or MSP's using the layer(s) with xrefs to be retained. Alternatively, there's also the File/Repair tool which allows you to suppress xrefs on loading. It sounds like there is a bad entity in the xref being used so you might also run the Repair Tool on the xref file too.
