Special Characters

I've never gotten special characters to appear on the drawing. I tried again today. The font has a degree sign at 176. I typed in my number, held down the "alt" key and typed 0176, released the key and only the number appeared, like every time before. Funny thing, I went to change that text later and the number with the degree sign appeared in the tool bar to show text to change. If its in the system, why doesn't it show up?
