That was classic! That is so me when I go anywhere. Drives my wife bonkers (hmmm, that might be a Freudian intentional thing). I was on a crusie ship once and started doing the same commentary and mental code citations until it dawned on me that they probably didn't need to comply with any codes, at least not the US codes that I was familiar with, since the ship was not registered in the US.
