Hello folks,

Manny asked me about Redstick CAD, which is a way to use a tablet (Apple or Android) or a smartphone to do on site documentation: http://www.redstickcad.com/index.html
Here is an introduction video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZU_PPHh1xA
And another slightly longer video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS9cARq5NZc

It has a base version for $10 that does quite a lot, and a Pro version for $200 that adds 3D and stories and Bluetooth input (which works on Android only for now), and a way to denote photos on the plan and link them to the photo you take with the camera in the device. The $500 "Pro Data" version does lots of BIM-type data tags. Here's a video if the differences between the versions:

My questions are: have you used Redstick, or do you know someone who has? Does the base version do most/all of what you need it to do? They are (apparently) an Australian company (Mitcham VIC 3132) - do they have a presence in Australia? It does do feet/inches and DXF exports, so how it works with DataCAD is also important.

The methods of drafting look straightforward and seem to fit how I work. Measuring the overalls first, and then adding in the openings and doors and windows makes good sense to me. And if need be, a trial run with the $10 base version is an easy decision. The website only shows the Android versions: http://redstick.myshopify.com/collections/all/3d So, you must need to go to the Apple AppStore for those versions - but I can't see them there.

I found the iCAD (Apple) version of the software, for $10.50 at the AppStore:

https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/icad/id459405477

And the Pro version is $270:

https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/redstick-pro/id513205315

It doesn't do Bluetooth, though, or at least until they get it working in the Apple version.

If Redstick CAD is a good program, then maybe we can get an import tool for DataCAD? That is, if the company makes a toolkit for this...

They say it uses IFC which is a open source BIM format. Not sure how widely used in day to day ops, but looks to have some big players involved. Might be a format that should be looked at.

I bought it last year sometime, (my version does not do 3d or photos, those must be new features). I have used a couple of times to do as-built measurements for remodeling projects and it seems to work pretty well. It has a somewhat intuitive way of creating the drawings and its pretty easy to make adjustments. I didn't like how the templates worked, but thats really a minor issue in my book, I am primarily interested in accurate dimensions, doors and window placement etc.

Hello,

I have used this software for a good few years now. I originally used this software to produce 100's of 2D floor plans (multiple sizes and shapes) for a few previous companies. Im now trying to incorporate the software into my 3D work by exporting IFC files out and importing them into sketchup and then into Tekla to use for modelling (works really well).

I have been in contact with the Australian company on several issues with quick responses.

One of the major things the software lacks is angles - it really struggles with them however, it can be overcome with techniques.

I would like to contribute to any questions you may have regarding this software :)

BTW:-

I have the Redstick pro-version and the standard version and I used it with the following software's: Autocad, Sketchup & Tekla

Regards,

Darren
