Greetings,

It has been my habit from way back, to always put framing collar ties @ 32" OC in a conventionally framed pitched roof, at about 1/3 below the ridge; for the purposes of bracing against wind loads. Am I wrong on this?

Here in CA we normally have collar ties at 48"oc (most of our roof framing is at 24"oc), and to be effective as a true collar tie it must be located within the bottom 1/3 of the rafter (or 2/3 below the ridge).

That's the way I have always done it. All of my framer friends, too.
I think that they just like to be different on the left coast.
