i have an open soffit on a 12/12 pitch

shall the rafters be notched?

I would insert an image but, I don't know how.

Hi Jason,

Can you zoom in so the image is larger? And, it looks like you pasted in the thumbnail image -- is the file you uploaded to Image Shack actually larger that that? 'Cuz I can't really make out anything in the image...

[Edit: are you asking about the horizontal cut on the rafter tail? You must have made it a bit larger -- I can just about make out the two parts of the image...]

That's more of a design questions and should be left up to the designer of the building or the owner.

Is this going on a house? or is it a commercial building?

Assuming its a house,

to answer your question, Yes - I would definitely "notch" the rafters

The other option would be a perpendicular cut so that the end was at a 90 degree angle to the run of the rafter. I would go with that or the notched version as they are less susceptible to damage. This all depends of course on the taste / intent of the design
