I just found a post through the Building Codes forum that I belong to that the ICC has decided to put their building codes online - including quite a few states - and it's free! Apparently they have some limitations on the 'free' part (limited search and print - but the entire text is there). Check it out here:

I haven't checked the California Codes to see if they are current with the latest errata's, but it's a start!

Wow that's great Alan, I feel a new toolbar set coming on. The free California HTML stuff doesn't have search, but I think I can wire up google to search it. I'll report back when I have something working. Neato.

Here's the Google custom search I setup for the 2007 CBC. It works pretty good. Better than their search in my opinion, but it's not quite a direct as a normal Google search I think due to the way they have the sections broke up. I'm looking into seeing if I can get Google to work it a bit different. But it works pretty good with smaller searches. Just have to play with a bit sometimes. FWIW.

Includes International Codes, ANSI, BOCA, SBBCI and CABO as well as multiple state codes (not just California).

You can also get free downloadable PDF versions of the 2007,2010 & 2013 codes here https://law.resource.org/pub/us/code/bsc.ca.gov/ The 2013 codes are scanned OCRed versions right now. They should have full digital versions available shortly. Sign up at ICC's website for supplement notifications via email, which you can download PDF's of the updated pages and swap them out digitally using a PDF reader like PDF-XChange Viewer.

While the ICC was resistant, apparently once a jurisdiction adopts a model-code as law, that actual-code-adopted becomes public property and loses it's copyright protection. If it's incorporated into the text of a law, it's in the 'public domain' for use.

NFPA, IAPMO and (I think) NEC are trying (again) to argue that they're codes are copyrightable because they have spent a considerable amount of money on testing, and because of THAT they can yank them from the public domain. I don't think this will end well for them (again).
