21:9 Monitors

This is a new thing to me - and boy, do I want one! Now! This is the LG 34UM95 34" 21:9 IPS monitor, which was selling at Best Buy for $700.

It can be set up as dual 1770x1440 5:4 areas - which is pretty sweet for DataCAD. It is IPS (in-plane switching) which is the best type of LCD display, and it is backlit with LED's, naturally.

:o

Man I don't know. I have a 27" now that is almost too wide. I think I prefer having a flanking monitors that I can have at about 20-30* on each side. (only have room for one now) But hey if it floats your boat right?

Maybe curved would be better, but they have got the horizontal viewing angle very wide, so the it all looks good, and flat means the visual scaling is not distorted. We used to have curved screens (CRT's) and those were lousy for CAD compared to flat screens.

Check out the Linus Tech video review - he covers the curved possibility, and about about how nice it is to NOT have the two bezels next to each other with dual monitors. This monitor can do side by side 5:4 displays without any bezel.

The vertical resolution is 1440, which is better than most screens, and it is an IPS, which is the best type for CAD, in my opinion. Gamers like faster response, and the curve, but IPS is why the viewing angles are so good.

Also, it is a matte screen, which is far batter than glossy in most situations.

I remember the Sony Trinitron CRTs that were curved across the horizontal plane. The problem with those was that it curved away from the viewer, quite different than these curved panel displays.

I would have to see it, but a concave curve is still a physical distortion of the image.

Saw this post AFTER I walked by the LG display at Best Buy.
Having issues with my main 3 year old 27" Samsung wide screen discussed on FB
https://www.facebook.com/robert.g.scott.7

I replaced the 27" with a 24" which sits along side my old HP w2207 nicely...the picture is much nicer than the 27" and after a few hours I'm not missing the extra real estate that much. For $130 it was a nice band aid :) Will definitely take a hard look at the LG now that I'm up and running again.

Re: The curved monitor: I do quite a bit of tracing PDF's and any distortion do to the curved surface would problematic. Gotta admit..two of those big curved sucka's side by side would be cool :)

My 34" flat monitor is coming tomorrow!

It is matte surface, 3440 x 1440, 320cd/m2 (bright!) and it has greater color depth (10bit?) than usual. And it is $410 OFF!

I remember the day I went from a 15" to a 17" CRT and was living the dream.

Right! My first computer had a 15" grayscale monitor, and when I got a new one with a 17" color monitor, it was amazing. That monitor was about $800, if I remember correctly, so $47 / inch. This new one (which should arrive later today) is just $17.64 / inch.

Hey Neil,

You have to use http: addresses (not https:) for forum YouTube links since the forum doesn't understand the code address for secure videos yet.

Hi Robert,

Here's what my desktop looks like - basically two 4:3 monitors side by side in the same frame:

It lets you tile the screen in many ways - here's a 16:5 split:

Here's a three-way split:

And a four-way split:
