I've always used Nvidia cards and had good luck -- and performance -- with them, though the breadth of Nvidia cards is bewildering.

Nvidia has been rock solid forever. ATI burned me about 3 times with cards prematurely dying. And don't even get me started on their drivers. For 2D Datacad you don't need much. Running up to a single 1920x1080 screen or dual monitors lower than 1920x1080 I'd go with something that has 2GB of ram. Running dual 1920x1080 monitors or higher you are going to want to get into the 4GB range. If you won't be doing any heavy 3D something like a Nvidia 640-740 series range should work fine. Don't go down into the 610,620,710,720 series. Things tend to get pretty weak in that realm. I prefer EVGA branded Nvidia cards these days. They are just work hard and are priced to compete. If you are going to get into 3D seriously, then you might want to check you most demanding 3D app's recommended requirements, which would probably put you into the Nvidia Quadro line of cards, but that would be outside Datacad land.
