G'Day forummers,
At ZDNet UK they have a comparison "shootout" with two AMD and two Intel dual core CPU's. They are the least expensive and the most expensive current models from each company: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and Athlon 64 X2 4800+ vs. Intel's Pentium D 820 and Pentium Extreme Edition (Pentium EE) 840.
A basic overview is that the AMD CPU's handily outperform the Intel CPU's in a majority of the tests and they consume significantly less power! At 100% load, the 3800+ system consumes 162watts vs 245watts for the D 820 (50% better), and the 4800+ system consumes 195watts vs 296watts for the EE 840 (also about 50% better)!
On some of the tests, the 3800+ even outperforms the EE 840...
