At the office here, we are looking into getting a new wide format plotter that prints color. We currently have a Xerox 8830 with a separate Xerox scanner. We also have an old HP 450C plotter that prints color, but we run into file size problems with it. We've been told that it's best to have a separate plotter for color and black and white drawings. Does anyone have any advice on a good color wide format plotter? Also, are there any advantages in getting an inkjet plotter over a laser plotter for color? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have an Oce tcs 400 inkjet wide format plotter. It is slower than a laser plotter, but works well for a smallish office, and with colour we can produce both b&w and colour drawings. Most things can plot on 'check' ie. draft setting and looks pretty good. On photo paper we use 'release' or higher quality settings. It is extremely slow when plotting larger graphic files, which is really annoying though, and could be that it does not have enough memory. OCE is a large company , ie burocratic, so support is not that great. We used to have an old hp 450C which we kept as a reserve but never used it so it went out the door recently ...

Would like to hear anyones opinions on Oce vs Kip as far as quality / dependablility & value. After looking at various printer/plotter options, it appears our output needs would rule out any ink-jets, so we are looking into new or low-milage wide-format laser printers. Oce has the TDS320 and Kip has the 3100 - both are pricey, but have very impressive capabilities. Does anyone with similar systems want to share their thoughts? Any insight would be appreciated. -rd

I'm sure price would be the biggest. Can you get a laser bigger than A3? If you can, you have plenty of work for it to do, and you can afford it, it would have to be the way to go. Lasers are inherently faster, more reliable and cheaper to run.

I would definitely suggest you to buy a laser printer especially if you want to print color. I would not say it is always cheaper- but if you want a really good one - you can get a better quality for a lower price - and as already said it is way more reliable and the colors are more beautiful and it is faster :)
