In need of a new mouse. Everything I have looked at just doesn't "feel" right. Either the center button(wheel) is way to stiff to use as snap or it is so light that it "clicks" when not wanted.
Any thoughts?

Hi Robert,

I like some of the Logitech mice with the "MicroGear" wheel -- it can have the detents like most other mice, or it can scroll freely. The wheel is metal, and so as a button it has a good feel.

Here's the MX1100, which is wireless, and has 2 AA batteries, that you use with high capacity rechargeable NiMH batteries for weeks on a charge:

Here's the MX620 (or the 610 for lefties), also with AA batteries:

The MX620 lacks the volume control buttons, that I have grown to like a lot.

Those are the only two that work for me; the rest are too small and/or the wrong shape. The MX Revolution's thumb wheel is just silly.

I will mention the one Microsoft mouse that is interesting, and makes sense for laptop use, called the Arc:

It folds down for better portability, and stows the reciever so you won't lose it.

I know how you feel. They all seem to be designed by and for poofters and nancies, and to add insult to the ergonomic shortcomings, they don't work too flash either. Just make sure whatever you get is easily returned if it isn't OK, or best try before you buy with a laptop. I bought two MS mice for the laptop recently, both duds and they are going back. They would only snap when they felt like it. I had an MS wireless mouse a year or so ago but it needed both hands and both feet to operate the centre button. Decent mice are always a matter of luck and it seems pretty clear that Microsoft are going through a particularly bad patch at the moment.

I have a couple of colleagues with Logitechs and they aren't complaining, so look there...

I didn't like the stiffness of the center wheel for snapping in Dcad either (MX 1000 and VX revolution both by Logitech) so I assigned my side scroll to middle button. Works for me.

Hey RParker,
My boss bought me a vertical mouse from Evoluent and it works great for cutting down on forearms stresses, from continuous use. I have the corded version and the clicking of the scroll wheel is great. Plus you get some extra buttons that are programable. I have my two extra buttons set to open layers and open my symbols browser.

Here's the link if your interrested:
