There was a trick (some setting we don't typically affect) that make the display window for hatches work better so it doesn't take 10 minutes to show an intense hatch pattern. What is that setting?
The 'gravel' pattern is the only one that gives us fits. There are no tricks to eliminate this: try the highest hatch scale you can, or try two (or more) simple hatch patterns overlaid to approximate the pattern. Or just turn off hatch display, until you plot; or turn off that layer until you plot.
Nope, I'm talking about the preview window. There is some setting (display scale, or other) that makes the preview window display very small. So when your mouse goes down the list of available options, it hangs up on certain hatches while it drafts a gazzilion lines on screen in the preview window. It's nice to see a representation of the pattern, but some setting makes a few of them intolerable. I think they were created for 1" details, so if I'm zoomed out to a floor plan, they are very, very detailed, can take 10 min to fill the preview window.
In the Hatch Manager, you'll need to Load the patterns you want to change. For each pattern, set the Display Scale to something less dense and hit Apply. Now, Save the pattern back out to its definition file.

You might wish to edit the symbol.dhp file, and change the Scale up and the display scale down (it will be the number down from the top of the display scale, in the case below, it would be the scale that is at F1. [Header] Scale=32 Angle=0 Display Scale=1
