First, make sure you have the correct hardlock for the version of DataCAD that is installed. The version number is printed on the label side of the CD.
For version 8.00 or version 8.05, you use a magenta hardlock with a white sticker.
For version 8.50 or 8.50.07, the hardlock is black with a white sticker.
DataCAD 9 uses a black hardlock with a yellow sticker that says "DataCAD 9" on it.
DataCAD 10 also uses a black hardlock with a yellow sticker, but it says "DataCAD X" on it.
DataCAD 11 uses a black hardlock with a yellow sticker and "DataCAD 11" printed on it.
DataCAD 11 USB keys have a version 11 sticker on them, but prior versions do not. If you do not know what version your USB key was programmed for, contact techsupport@datacad.com and we can look it up for you.
Next, verify that the key is securely connected to the computer. Parallel keys should be screwed in to a parallel port. If your computer does not have parallel ports, a USB to parallel adapter will not work. You must contact technical support to exchange your parallel key for a USB key. USB keys have a small red light that turns on when connected.
If the correct parallel key is securely connected, but still does not work, test the parallel port to verify it is functional. Try connecting a printer and printing a Windows test page from the printer driver properties windiw. If you have a bi-directional device, such as a scanner, ZIP drive or multi-function printer, disconnect it, reboot Windows, then try opening DataCAD to see if perhaps there is a conflict.
If your USB key is connected, but the light does not turn on, remove the "hardlock device driver" listed in Add\Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Reinstall the driver using the latest version posted on the DataCAD Web site.
To obtain the latest hardlock driver go to https://www.datacad.com and click on "Product Updates" on the left side of the page. Scroll to the bottom and choose "Download latest hardware key drivers."
Follow the directions on that page to download and install the new driver. If you are using Windws XP, you must make sure you are logged on as Administrator.
After Windows has finished loading (be sure to wait until all drivers and background applications are finished loading) you can connect your hardware key. If you have a USB key, wait until the red light appears before opening DataCAD.
If you are unable to resolve the problem, please contact DataCAD Technical Support at techsupport@datacad.com.
