SHX font definitions in AutoCAD's font folder are different than from DataCAD's font folder, even if they have the same name. For consistency, you can copy the fonts from one folder to other, or change your DataCAD's font path to look for AutoCAD's font folder.

Using autocads fonts would be a really good way of avoiding text size problems. Is it possib;e to also link to autocads line types and therefore avoiding creating the dreaded shx file ?

Tools, Program Preferences. On the Pathnames tab, look for "DataCAD Fonts" about half way down the first screen.
